Lucie

Dark brown, fathomless eyes
Bypassing ears,
Professing earnest need
For food. For love.
For attention.

You saw our pack expand:
Babes’ fur-filled hands,
Vain, usurping kittens,
With the patience
Of a mother.

Blinking, now silvered orbs,
Scan the worlds shapes
For blurred, mute company.
A touch. A stroke.
Reassurance.

Behind those rheumy eyes
Confused and foil’d
Your inner puppy begs,
So bewildered
By aged frame.

With twitching, trembling paws,
Deep huffing breaths,
Grey muzzle whiffling,
You yip, chasing
Dreamland rabbits.

Companion long-serving;
Uncomplaining.
You have done enough now.
No aches. No pains.
Off you go, girl.
